Designed by Jacqueline Durran, a costume designer who has won an Academy Award, the outfits for each character in the film were carefully made with great attention to detail. The biggest challenge was creating Belle’s famous ball gown, as fans of the original animated movie loved her traditional yellow dress. Many discussions took place about the design, color, and material in order to capture the beloved style for the live-action version.
Jacqueline described how the dress in our movie was selected to be a vibrant yellow in honor of the animated version. The aim was to add a fresh twist by adding extra embellishments and giving it a more realistic appearance. The ultimate gown was crafted from multiple layers of airy satin organza in a sunny yellow shade (a grand total of 180 feet), shaped in a broad circular design, and assembled using a whopping 3,000 feet of thread.
The top two levels were decorated with a beautiful gold leaf pattern that matched the intricate design of the ballroom’s Rococo floors, and decorated with a stunning total of 2,160 sparkling Swarovski crystals.
