Created by Jacqueline Durran, an Oscar-winning costume designer, the costumes in the movie were meticulously crafted with precision. The focal point of their work was Belle’s iconic ball gown, which posed a significant challenge due to fans’ attachment to her classic yellow dress from the animated classic. Countless debates were held to determine the perfect design, color, and fabric to pay homage to the beloved original while giving it a fresh twist for the live-action adaptation.
Jacqueline shared the story behind choosing the vibrant yellow dress for our film, inspired by the animated version. The goal was to put a unique spin on it by adding more embellishments for a realistic touch. The final gown was made from layers of light satin organza in a sunny yellow hue, spanning 180 feet in total. It was crafted in a wide circular design and put together using an impressive 3,000 feet of thread.
The uppermost tiers featured an elegant gold leaf design that perfectly complemented the intricate Rococo floors of the ballroom, adorned with a dazzling array of 2,160 shimmering Swarovski crystals.
