Matheus Nunes of Manchester City detained by Madrid police after alleged theft from fan in nightclub, bail set at £53m

According to reports, Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes was recently taken into custody for allegedly stealing a mobile phone at a popular nightclub in Madrid. The 26-year-old Portuguese player was detained in the early hours of September 8 at the well-known venue La Riviera and brought in for questioning at a nearby police station.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo stated that the incident occurred around 5.30am when Nunes was accused of taking the phone from a man who attempted to snap a picture of him without permission in the club’s restrooms. Born in Brazil, Nunes apparently grabbed the phone in a moment of anger and refused to give it back.

Authorities were called to the scene and promptly arrested Nunes after confirming that he still had the stolen phone in his possession.

Nunes, pictured in August, was released hours later following the intervention of a lawyer

Nunes, who was captured in a photo in August, was let go from custody shortly after a lawyer stepped in to help. The former Wolves athlete was supposedly placed in handcuffs at a nightclub before being transported to a National Police station in the Madrid district of Arganzuela. He was released later on with the assistance of a legal representative. El Mundo mentioned that he may be facing charges and a trial due to the incident. Attempts to contact the National Police in Madrid for a response this morning were unsuccessful. Nunes was said to be in Madrid with companions after not being selected by Portugal for international duties last month. The 26-year-old came off the bench for Man City in their first game back from the international break, contributing to their 2-1 victory over Brentford. Nunes earned his first starting position of the season in a 2-1 Carabao Cup triumph over Watford the previous month, scoring the second goal for Man City. Although he was not utilized in Man City’s last two Premier League games against Arsenal and Newcastle, he did play the complete match in their 4-0 Champions League triumph against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday night.
